Christmas Rumble Raises Funds to Fight Diabetes

Countering the Christmas to New Year hibernation period, our Joint Managing Director, Dominic Will, hit the mat, bringing together judo experts from across London and Luton in the second annual Christmas Rumble.

Passionate about fighting diabetes, Dominic knows first hand just how challenging it can be to deal with the disease; his eldest daughter has Type 1 Diabetes. The Christmas Rumble was set up to raise funds for The Pendsey Trust – a charity that provides educational funding for those affected by Type 1 diabetes in developing countries, enabling them to enter employment and afford the medical care they need to survive. The Trust aims to provide beneficiaries with the opportunity for a healthy sustainable future.

Dominic says: “Diabetes has been a long-term battle for us and particularly for my daughter who needs regular monitoring of her insulin levels and handles it all so well.

“We’re incredibly lucky here in in the UK that we can access insulin easily and gain other support through the NHS and parent networks. But I can only imagine how tough it would be if we struggled to source insulin for her, or if our family simply couldn’t afford it.”

Hosted by Barnet Judo Club, the night saw over 30 judo challengers (judokas) hit the mat with fellow contestants of all abilities, ranging from beginners up to black belts. Dominic raised sponsorship for the event, in additions to participants’ mat fees and all proceeds were donated.

The event was a great success, raising over £1,500 for charity. This includes more than £1,100 for The Pendsey Trust and a further £400 raised on the night in mat fees, split between two UK-based charities; Tommy’s and The British Judo Council Foundation.

Dominic adds: “It was fantastic to see so many people battling it out on the mat for such good causes and to work off their Christmas excess at the same time. I’m delighted that we raised so much for good causes and will be gearing up my training ahead of next year’s event.”
