Charities alone can’t change the world

In today's world, it's not just charities that have a duty to contribute to a better society. We all have a role to play — whether it's giving time and expertise on a pro bono basis, getting involved with organisations serving our local communities or embedding ethical practices into our place of work.

The third sector does amazing work to tackle a range of global issues, from disease and poverty to environmental concerns. But the onus shouldn't be on charities alone. Businesses have a responsibility, both to their staff and the wider public, to help shape a better world. There shouldn't be a distinction between the sectors. We should all be looking at how we can contribute.

Initiatives such as the Better Society Awards are a chance to celebrate the good work carried out by commercial companies and recognise the efforts this sector has made. It's also an opportunity to highlight the untapped potential to deliver more change. With more schemes like it, we can broadcast the message that everyone can contribute to a better society.  And in turn, we'll see a shift towards more companies adopting ethical policies and practices.

We're delighted to have been shortlisted for the Most Ethical Business category in the Better Society Awards, alongside some other good companies.  Last week, I was lucky enough to address our head office staff at one of our regular gatherings, where the upcoming awards ceremony was a hot topic of conversation. What struck me the most from the conversations I had with colleagues is that everyone at HOME recognises we can do more.

Whatever the result on the night, we're looking forward to hearing about and learning from the approach of other organisations, and forming new relationships. I’m particularly excited about the opportunities to improve and measure the progress we’ve made when the gongs are being handed out in 2018, so watch this space.

Follow @CTBetterSociety and #BetterSocietyAwards for updates from the awards ceremony on 11 May 2017. We'll also be tweeting from the awards ceremony on @HomeD2D.
